In late nineteenth-century London, twelve-year-old Ciel Phantomhive assumes the title of Earl and head of the Phantomhive noble house following the arson and ritual slaughter that claimed his parents. Surviving weeks of occult captivity, Ciel summons a demon to seal an unbreakable Faustian contract. In exchange for the absolute obedience of this demon—taking the guise of refined butler Sebastian Michaelis—Ciel offers his immortal soul upon the day his revenge is exacted.

Installed as Queen Victoria's Watchdog, Ciel operates in the brutal shadows of the British Empire. Together with Sebastian, who wields superhuman physical prowess alongside flawless etiquette, Ciel investigates grisly underworld conspiracies, secret occult societies, and black-market syndicates. From solving the Jack the Ripper murders alongside Grim Reapers to infiltrating Noah's Ark Circus, Weston College, and cursed German territories, each mission drags the young master deeper into the sinister plot that orchestrated the extermination of his family.

What to Expect

Black Butler executes a precise balance of episodic Victorian crime procedurals and long-form psychological drama. Combat avoids mindless power scaling; instead, Sebastian demonstrates lethal precision against human hitmen, rogue Shinigami death scythes, and supernatural abominations. As canonical arcs progress through the Phantomhive Manor Murders, Luxury Liner, Public School, and Emerald Witch arcs, the story transitions from satirical black comedy to grim psychological tension, challenging Ciel's identity and uncovering the cold reality behind his ancestral lineage.
